According to data from Growthepie, Ethereum’s combined Layer-1 and Layer-2 infrastructure recently peaked at over 24,000 transactions per second (TPS), largely driven by Lighter, a newly launched Layer-2 chain purpose-built for high-frequency trading.
To put that in perspective, Ethereum Layer-1 typically processes between 15 and 30 TPS. Even Layer-2 networks like Base usually hover around 100–200 TPS. Lighter, however, spiked to around 4,000 TPS on its own, helping the wider Ethereum ecosystem post its fastest performance in history.
This milestone has become a rallying cry for Ethereum maximalists who have long promised that the network’s modular roadmap—focused on Layer-2 scalability rather than Layer-1 expansion—would eventually pay off.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin echoed the sentiment in a recent post, simply stating, “Ethereum is scaling.”
Lighter’s Architecture and Trade-Offs

But speed comes at a price. Lighter has already experienced several network outages since its October launch. Most notably, a disruption on October 28 led to nearly $775,000 in USDC being compensated to affected wallets. Critics have drawn comparisons to Solana’s rocky early days, where uptime was sacrificed for performance.

Rezso Schmiedt of ₿RRR Capital questioned whether this record TPS actually translates to value for ETH holders. “Yes, more transactions. But where’s the value accrual? L2s capture fees, not ETH,” he noted.
There’s growing consensus that aligning Layer-2 success with Ethereum’s long-term sustainability will require deeper integration—whether through shared sequencer models, fee routing to the mainnet, or MEV redistribution.

Despite concerns, the Ethereum community appears aligned on the long-term vision: scaling via Layer-2s is no longer a theory—it’s a functioning reality.
Upgrades like Dencun and Pectra have already enhanced Layer-2 throughput, and Ethereum’s roadmap continues to focus on enabling even more efficient rollups through features like proto-danksharding and blobspace optimization.
The big unlock, as Adams put it, is just beginning. The Ethereum of the future may be less about what happens on its base layer and more about what it enables above it. In that world, Layer-2s are not competition—they’re the execution engines of a new financial stack.
